What the seven second rule really means

It is a claim about the first pass over a resume, not the whole reading. On United States figures, a recruiter's first look averages about 7.4 seconds. That pass decides whether the resume gets a proper read at all, but it is a triage step, not the interview decision.

The rule does not mean write a shorter resume. It means the top of page one has to work on its own, because for a few seconds it is the only part being read.

Where the number comes from

It comes from United States recruiter surveys, not an Australian study, so treat it as an order of magnitude rather than a stopwatch. The behaviour behind it travels regardless of country: a person going through a pile of applications scans before they read, and the scan is what decides whether the read happens.

What actually gets seen in that glance

  • The most recent job title and employer. The first thing a scanning eye lands on and the fastest signal of whether you are in the right field.
  • How recent the experience is. Dates confirm whether the top of the page is current or several roles out of date.
  • One or two standout lines. A specific, quantified result near the top, not buried on page two where the scan never reaches.
  • Whether the layout is readable at a glance. Dense, unbroken paragraphs get skipped over even when the content underneath is strong.

What to do about it

Put the strongest, most relevant evidence for this particular role in the top third of page one, not the oldest job or the most generic summary line. Break dense paragraphs into short bullets a scanning eye can land on. None of this is about tricking anyone; it is about making sure the fact that would get you the interview is not the one sentence nobody reached.

The misreading to avoid

"Seven seconds" gets read as "keep it to one page", and that does not follow.
